Written Concept Statement Development Methodology for Interior Design Educators
Monday, March 19, 1:00 PM – 4:00 PM, Baltimore
Presented by Vincent Cellucci, TL Richie, and Jun Zou, Louisiana State University
In the interior design discipline, concept statements are highly recognized for their role as a road map to direct the design process. This workshop introduces the written concept statement development process, “3 Elements Methodology,” used at Louisiana State University. This methodology has been refined in LSU’s unique, communication-intensive studio courses over the past three years.
The workshop will focus on introducing and applying the method to develop written concepts statements for mock studio projects, but it will also contextualize this methodology with visual process work. Participants will engage with this methodology from three perspectives: students, peers, and faculty. Exercises associated with these roles include composing, critiquing with visual revision strategies, and pedagogical discussion. These instruction tools are presented to enhance students’ written communication skills, drive students’ entire design projects, and assist educators in clarifying concept statement expectations.
